Look for a Trident 256 SVGA card.  They rock.

ash - the trident 256 SVGA is one of the first video cards with 256 colours - nothing in the past 5-6 years would even work on it.

You should ask at a local computer repair shop to see what they recommend for the price you have in mind.  I do suggest waiting a bit - like mid-April before buying anything, there will be a small drop in price across the market on bigger/better cards as the companies roll out their newest cards.

second.. beosboy.. and ash577.. also keep in mind that sometime this yr, there,(computer ppls will be bring out the new direct x 10.. and yes i know beosboy.. the price will be way out of ash's range.. but if you are upgrading.. that is something to think about..
3nd..if you have an intel..and your motherboard supports ATI , you should try to run that..a good ATI card but alittle in the money is MSI RX1650XT T2D 256E.... its about as good as an Gefore 7600GT

but after saying all that...i agree with billyd and get some knowledge about ur pc and the basic of a computer...
